2016-17 FHL playoffs: ROUND 1 Matchups

Created by NorwegianOiler on 2017-03-06 09:33:09 (updated by NorwegianOiler on 2017-03-13 01:57:25)

It is here again. Playoff time!

The FHL deadline wasn't a flurry of activity, but a noteworthy deal between the Arcadians and Mustangs promoted the marriage of "win now" and "win later". Mcsorley's acquisition of Artemi Panarin should boost his chances to land either the Norack Cup, the playoff trophy, or both; whereas the Mustangs bolstered their rebuild with a top prospect in Puljujärvi and a 1st rounder.  We're coming into our fourth official playoff campaign. After two consecutive Norack Cups and playoff trophies the Vikings were ousted in the first round last season by the surging Dragons. The Milita went on to win the playoffs, bringing the total unique FHL playoff winners to three, alongside the Heatwave and Vikings. Perhaps we will see another team added to that list this spring?

Good luck, everyone.

This post will be reserved for the daily update of the playoff matchups - though somewhat later than the automatic update on the standings page. The first round matchups are as follows:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The FHL Gazette: A portion of the same old and a dose of the unfamiliar.

The FHL season has come into its final few months with the Vikings and Milita (somewhat) predictably holding their own in the top. Though only having allowed the Milita to own top spot for two days (one of which happened to be GM jfrizzio's birthday) in the past three months, the Vikings have yet to fully pull away in the title race. The Milita are poised to make a run for their first ever Norack Cup partly on the strength of their Blue Jacket contingent who are really firing this year. The top two are accompanied, however, by dark horse Arcadians. They finished a lowly 19th in GM mcsorley's first season in charge, but through some Lazarus-like ascension they've put themselves in position to fight for the title already! No matter how the season ends for them, the Arcadians have enjoyed a successful campaign, and their GM a clear candidate for GM of the year, too.

Following behind the top three are other climbers like the Devils and Stingers, both having solid seasons so far, as well as the quietly improving Chiefs, Thunder and Raiders. Former powerhouse Heatwave keep on falling and whilst Ktown withers away his rivals rejoice at the silence following in the wake of the sinking franchise. Where are you, Ktown? Former top five sides like the Gladiators and Bulldogs have taken similar falls.

The Rhinos and Bombers are also doing somewhat worse than last season, goaltending being a problem area for both of these original FHL franchises.

The Spartans, Serpents and Lakers are taking a step out of the absolute bottom, building slowly to bring about a sustainable change in the standings' scenery for them. But, as the Arcadians have shown, change can come about quickly for teams in their position as well! Dropping in place of these slow risers are teams like the Burninators and Mustangs, both having seasons to forget.

After a greatly impressive improvement year, the Dragons have regressed and currently reside in the bottom two, together with the Rattleheads, who have slumped into the very bottom for the first time ever.

The FHL is clearly dynamic, as new teams rise and others step back, but through all the change one fact remains; the Viking Age has yet to end!

FHL News: Our future

Created by NorwegianOiler on 2017-01-10 14:13:43 (updated by NorwegianOiler on 2017-01-10 14:17:45)

Dear General Mongrels of the Foil Hockey League,

Refer to our forum for the long version of this post and for the chance to comment. The abridged version follows.

The following are ideas, merely, that could be part of the future of the FHL (though Racki's tightly harnessed to the grinding wheel thus leaving us but to dream)

1) A matchup based league where two teams face off each week.

- Hypothetical results below.

2) An expansion to 24 teams (for various purposes, inter alia dispersion of talent and the schedule logic in a matchup based league)

- Nothing concrete is planned. Basically it would be allowing expansion teams to pick from everyone in the inactive (but not passive) roster - and enough talent would be available to produce some decent teams.

3) Restructuring the roster system into a 23 man NHL roster (all counting towards the cap) where only 20 players "score points" each week. A 7 man AHL roster (inactive players today, subject to waivers if sent here from the NHL roster) and a 5 man JUNIOR roster of prospects (today's passive roster)

4) Possibly allowing for additional roster spots for own draft picks (to allow more long term prospect development at the cost of FA pickups - thus boosting the value of draft picks)

5) Stricter rules for picking up and dropping players without contracts/NHL games (such as your Anton Rödin type this season)

6) The line-based system suggested earlier - allowing GMs to "coach" their teams by setting forward lines, defensive pairs, and starting/backup netminders to point multipliers, thus allowing us to speculate on hot streaks and such.

Here's what a matchup based FHL would look based on this year's scoring:

And finally, the standings post week 13 of a total of what would be 21 regular season weeks...

2016-17 Pre-season survey: Serpents, Mustangs, and Megasus

Created by NorwegianOiler on 2016-10-11 15:18:45

The Serpents of MG10 (The Marian Gaborik worshipper!)

Where did you finish last season and what are the main reasons you ended up there?

I finished 2nd last in what was a season of horrific luck with injuries and inconsistency. The one and only reason the team finished as low as it did was of course, because of the injury to Carey Price. However, even with a healthy Price, the team was surely doomed to finished near the bottom of the standings. The team got off to an awful start last season, with several key players not performing to their standards. Later in the year, a few players picked up their games, but it wasn't enough to gain back what was lost after Carey Price was shelved.

- How did you do in relation to your biggest rivals?
Well, I finished below all but one team, so...need I say more.

What have you changed about your team since the end of last season?
Not much has changed in the makeup of the team. All the players that have made up the core of the team since the beginning are all back. It would be a nice surprise if a couple of draft picks could rise up out of junior and farm team purgatory at last.

What is your goal for the season - what would you consider a successful campaign?
I would like to the team to get back to at least the middle territory it occupied in previous seasons. Some better injury luck would certainly help in this regard as well as bounce back/reclamation seasons from players like Mikkel Boedker, Nick Leddy and Brandon Sutter.

Create a "12 forward, 6 defenseman, 2 goalie lineup" from your roster.
Mikkel Boedker - Nicklas Backstrom - Kyle Okposo
Michael Frolik - Tomas Plekanec - Marian Gaborik
Andre Burakovsky - Patrik Berglund - Jakob Silfverberg
Pierre-Luc Dubois - Brandon Sutter - Shane Doan

Duncan Keith - Nick Leddy
Ryan McDonagh - Morgan Rielly
Darnell Nurse - Patrick Wiercioch

Which players do you expect to carry your team?
The team goes how Nicklas Backstrom goes. The team is most productive when he's in the lineup. Others include Carey Price, Kyle Okposo and Duncan Keith.

Do you have any players you expect to surprise people this season?
Andre Burakovsky. Playing for his first pro-level contract, I expect him to play lights out.

Do you have any particular goals in the trade market? Which players on your roster might be available? (and for what price?)
I am not actively shopping anyone, but am willing to listen to offers for anyone except Carey Price.

What are your team's biggest strengths and weaknesses?
The team's strength is and has always been defensive depth. Offensive depth and offensive consistency has always been a limitation.

Which teams do you predict as top five in the FHL this season?

1. Militia
2. Vikings
3. Gladiators
4. Burninators
5. Heat

- Do you have a favorite to win it all?
The Burninators build off of their unexpected cinderella run and win it the Cup.

Which teams do you predict to be near the bottom come season's end?
Arcadians, Stingers and me.

Do you have any messages to relay to the fellowship of the FHL?
Enjoy the season everyone.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DAWGTOY'S MUSTANGS (Of proud young-blood heritage)

Where did you finish last season and what are the main reasons you ended up there?
12th place. Trying to retool and find some room to breath under the weight of the cap. Too many of my players got paid too much money.
- How did you do in relation to your biggest rivals?
Not sure that I have a rivalry, I hate you all the same :)

What have you changed about your team since the end of last season?
Well, I lost trades in order to reduce salary. I followed that up by losing more trades. I'd likely make an excellent Oiler GM.

What is your goal for the season - what would you consider a successful campaign?
Top ten finish would be good. I predict 15th.

Create a "12 forward, 6 defenseman, 2 goalie lineup" from your roster.
Planarian-Henrique-Toffoli
Ladd-RNH-Helm
Teravainen-Anisimov-Armia

PK-Savard
Klefbom-Larsson
Braun-Demers

Bishop and Varly

Which players do you expect to carry your team?
PK, Keepers, Toffoli, Panarin, and God.

Do you have any players you expect to surprise people this season?
No surprises here. Panarin was the surprise of the century.

Do you have any particular goals in the trade market? Which players on your roster might be available? (and for what price?)

Ladd will be a healthy scratch. I can't afford him. If you want him for pennies on the dollar, send the requests. Pick and prospect.

What are your team's biggest strengths and weaknesses?
Goaltending is solid. D is ok, but lacks offence outside PK. Forward depth is lacking.

Which teams do you predict as top five in the FHL this season?
Glads, Militia, Vikes, Rhino, Bulldogs.

- Do you have a favorite to win it all?
Glads will make some deals to put them over the top. It's a marathon not a sprint.

Which teams do you predict to be near the bottom come season's end?
Sorry to kick a man when he's down, but the Lakers have issues.

Do you have any messages to relay to the fellowship of the FHL?
I'm a father of three. Twins are now 7, and a 10 year old. Between Hockey, competitive gymnastics and dance my kids take up a ton of my time. This may be my final season. I'll make that decision later in the year. At times I really enjoy the FHL and at times it can be a burden. I will manage this team with continued honour and respect, but I will make a decision about my future in due time.

Go Oilers Go.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHOUDU'S MEGASUS (On the rise)

Where did you finish last season and what are the main reasons you ended up there?

- How did you do in relation to your biggest rivals?
The entire league are my biggest rivals, so... considering my 11th place showing last season, not that great.

What have you changed about your team since the end of last season?
I didn't make many moves over the off season besides getting rid of some expiring contracts. I'm looking for the moves I made last year, especially strengthening my D with some prospects to pay off.

What is your goal for the season - what would you consider a successful campaign?
Top 3

Create a "12 forward, 6 defenseman, 2 goalie lineup" from your roster.
Tavares - Sharp - Saad
Staal - Bozak - Lehtera
Larkin - Duclair - Horvat
Pirri - Hanzal - Ennis

Sekara - Stone
Maata - Lindbohm
Werenski - Dumoulin

Elliot
Ward

Which players do you expect to carry your team?
My goalies may actually start getting a high number of starts this season so I'm expecting a big turn around there.

Do you have any players you expect to surprise people this season?
Werenski is already getting inserted in some Calder talk but too early to see. A few other folks that my surprise are Dumoulin, Lindbohm, Johns, Carr, and Grandland - all "should" have solid seasons.

Do you have any particular goals in the trade market? Which players on your roster might be available? (and for what price?)
I'm not really looking for anything right now but I'm always open to offers. I could always use another goalie.

What are your team's biggest strengths and weaknesses?
Fwds are my strength. D and G are my potential weaknesses, only because there are so many question marks on their potential.

Which teams do you predict as top five in the FHL this season?
Vikings, Gladiators, Bombers, Heatwave, and Megasus

- Do you have a favorite to win it all?
Ummm, Megasus of course.

Which teams do you predict to be near the bottom come season's end?
The usual suspects

Do you have any messages to relay to the fellowship of the FHL?

It's on like donkey kong. Good luck!

HABOILER'S LAKERS (He of the dire goalie situation)

Where did you finish last season and what are the main reasons you ended up there?

Dead Last
- How did you do in relation to your biggest rivals?
Lakers are their own rival.

What have you changed about your team since the end of last season?
Drafted Matthews.

What is your goal for the season - what would you consider a successful campaign?
Get out of the basement and find a decent goalie.

Create a "12 forward, 6 defenseman, 2 goalie lineup" from your roster.
CARL HAGELIN TYLER JOHNSON JORDAN EBERLE
MATT READ AUSTON MATTHEWS MIKE FISHER
LARS ELLER ERIC STAAL KYLE CONNOR
ANDREW DESJARDINS KYLE BRODZIAK DANIEL WINNIK
BRENT BURNS DANNY DEKEYSER
BRENT SEABROOK ERIK GUDBRANSON
KRIS RUSSELL DENNIS WIDEMAN
MICHAEL HUTCHINSON
JOONAS KORPISALO

Which players do you expect to carry your team?
Eberle, Burns

Do you have any players you expect to surprise people this season?
Kyle Connor if he makes it.

Do you have any particular goals in the trade market? Which players on your roster might be available? (and for what price?)
Decent goalie. Open to anything if it makes sense.

What are your team's biggest strengths and weaknesses?
Defense is ok.

Which teams do you predict as top five in the FHL this season?
Vikings, Heatwave, Militia, Bombers, Bulldogs

- Do you have a favorite to win it all?
Bulldogs

Which teams do you predict to be near the bottom come season's end?
Lakers

Do you have any messages to relay to the fellowship of the FHL?
Trade me a goalie please!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JFRIZZIO'S MILITIA (Reigning playoff champion - and no, it is not the most prestigious trophy of the FHL)

Where did you finish last season and what are the main reasons you ended up there?
Finished second in the overall standings and won the playoffs. I'm not sure if overall standings or a playoff championship is more prestigious, but we'll go with a playoff championship! I drafted my team for the future in the inaugural draft, so I credit patience to the success. I've given my young players time to develop, and a lot of them have paid off.
- How did you do in relation to your biggest rivals?
Well, considering the Vikings won the regular season, not as well as we had hoped! But hey, they definitely paid off the refs, or something like that.

What have you changed about your team since the end of last season?
Not much really. We let go of some dead weight, but thank them for their contribution to the club. Drafted a few solid rookies. But most importantly, watched a lot of players get hefty raises again.

What is your goal for the season - what would you consider a successful campaign?
Sweet victory! And upgrade my depth on defence and in goal.

Create a "12 forward, 6 defenseman, 2 goalie lineup" from your roster.
Nash - Toews - Tarasenko
Jenner - Johansen - Voracek
Tatar - Kesler - Little
Wennberg - Dubinsky - Palmieri
Ex: Johansson, Niederrieter

Ristolainen - Karlsson
Zadorov - Gostisbehere
Sergachev - Murphy
Ex: Pokka

Rask
Hutton

Which players do you expect to carry your team?
Tarasenko, Johansen, Jenner, Ristolainen, Karlsson and Rask.

Do you have any players you expect to surprise people this season?
Travis Konecny has been spectacular in camp. I just hope he's no Brandon Bochenski. Jacob Larsson could become a solid addition, although it might not show on the score sheet.

Do you have any particular goals in the trade market? Which players on your roster might be available? (and for what price?)
Well I have a problem that a lot of others have as well. Too many high priced players. It would be ideal to move one or two for some defencemen. Toews, Kesler, Voracek, M. Johansson possibly.

What are your team's biggest strengths and weaknesses?
Offence is the obvious strength. I also have a great top 3 on defence, but no depth below that. I am patiently waiting for my prospects to become NHL material. Proving to be slower than hoped.

Which teams do you predict as top five in the FHL this season?
The usual suspects, with a couple teams knocking on the door.

- Do you have a favorite to win it all?
Could be in for a surprise, there are a lot of good young players on the teams just outside the top.

Which teams do you predict to be near the bottom come season's end?
Well, when you consider the Vikings' early playoff exit last season, we feel this trend could continue for them. We feel like they will be in the running for Nolan Patrick. Better get those scouts over to Brandon, Manitoba. All jokes aside, it's all a wild guess because of all the young new talent entering the league this season. It could be anyone.

Do you have any messages to relay to the fellowship of the FHL?
Good luck to everyone! Lets drop the puck!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 QUINSTONE'S GLADIATORS (Chucker's nemesis)

Where did you finish last season and what are the main reasons you ended up there?
3rd and lost in the semis in the playoffs. Wasnt quite getting enough out of some key players. Goalies werent as good as the previous year either.

- How did you do in relation to your biggest rivals?
Very well. Chucker was at the bottom.

What have you changed about your team since the end of last season?
Made some big changes and went more of an offensive route. Moved out both goalies to help the team get younger overall which should help with cap issues and future production.

What is your goal for the season - what would you consider a successful campaign?
I would say finish in the top 10, goaltending is a big question mark and my young goalies are still a few years away.

Create a "12 forward, 6 defenseman, 2 goalie lineup" from your roster.
Seems i dont have many centres.

Gaudreau, Zibanejad, Ovechkin
Eriksson, Fabbri, Miller
Vanek, Colborne, Tkachuk
Kunitz, Lowry, Yakupov

Ekblad, Muzzin
Peitrangelo,Hutton
Gudas, McCabe

Pavelec
Subban

Which players do you expect to carry your team?
Ovechkin, Gaudreau, Ekblad and Pietrangelo.
Do you have any players you expect to surprise people this season?
Not really, seems like a lot broke out last year. Heres to hoping Yakupov does something?

Do you have any particular goals in the trade market? Which players on your roster might be available? (and for what price?) Always willing to discuss trades but im fairly happy with where my roster is right now. Of course id like to clear Dustin Brown but that wont happen haha.

What are your team's biggest strengths and weaknesses?
Looking at it now, probably my offense and defense. Goaltending would be weak.

Which teams do you predict as top five in the FHL this season?
Vikings, Militia, Bulldogs, Gladiators and Rhinos.

- Do you have a favorite to win it all?
Me? Maybe an upset that nobody would expect. That would be exciting.

Which teams do you predict to be near the bottom come season's end?
Stingers.

Do you have any messages to relay to the fellowship of the FHL?

Good luck.

Other than a couple minor trades at the draft I haven't changed anything

Rask/Zetterberg/Koivu
Komarov/Draisaitl/Rakell
King/Connoly/Perron

Do you have any particular goals in the trade market? Which players on your roster might be available? (and for what price?)
No., but always willing to discus a trade

What are your team's biggest strengths and weaknesses?

Thunder of course

Which teams do you predict to be near the bottom come season's end?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

METAL&OIL'S RHINOS  (The best team yet to win a Norack cup - third overall in points all time in the FHL)

Where did you finish last season and what are the main reasons you ended up there? Bolstered by solid goaltending the Rhinos finished in 7th place.
- How did you do in relation to your biggest rivals?
A couple of spots down from the Heatwave although we did outlast them in the playoffs.

What have you changed about your team since the end of last season? Not a lot of changes other then signing some goaltending depth. Gonna rely of some of my youngsters to show some gains.

What is your goal for the season - what would you consider a successful campaign?
Get back into the top 5 and have some of my youth see breakout preformances.

Create a "12 forward, 6 defenseman, 2 goalie lineup" from your roster.
D.Sedin - F.Nielson - H.Sedin
O.Palat - M.Perreault - P.Hornqvist
A.Killorn - E.Fehr - R.Vrbata

Rhinos, Militia, Vikings Glads & Dragons

- Do you have a favorite to win it all?
Militia

Which teams do you predict to be near the bottom come season's end?
It's hard to climb out of the basement, Lakers again.

Do you have any messages to relay to the fellowship of the FHL?
Just drop the puck already!!!

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RACKI'S BOMBERS (Whose GM has yet to script a way to make the Bombers win)

Where did you finish last season and what are the main reasons you ended up there?
I finished 6th, which I think is fairly good for this team. I think a new attention to goaltending turned this ship in the right direction. A massive failure on the blueline, however, resulted in not breaking the top 5 or even better. #2 forwards, #3 goaltending, league worst defense. Woops.

- How did you do in relation to your biggest rivals?
My rivals are the entire league, so I'd say I did not too shabby.. only 5 did better. Plus I bested all my "real life" friends, so that's gotta be good for something.

What have you changed about your team since the end of last season?
The defense. Added a lot here, but I'm not sure it actually got any better.. just fuller.

What is your goal for the season - what would you consider a successful campaign?
Rebuild the blueline without ruining the forwards and goaltending. Finish top 5.

Create a "12 forward, 6 defenseman, 2 goalie lineup" from your roster.
Pacioretty Carter Jagr
Jokinen Scheifele Atkinson
Hudler Eakin Ribeiro
Tierny Soderberg Clutterbuck

Beauchemin Severson
Despres Kulikov
Oduya Manson
(God this blueline sucks)

Crawford
Niemi

Which players do you expect to carry your team?
Max Pac, Scheifele, Crawford.. the usual.

Do you have any players you expect to surprise people this season?
Caggiula. Maybe one of my young D.

Do you have any particular goals in the trade market? Which players on your roster might be available? (and for what price?)
Check the trade block. Goals are to fix the D.

What are your team's biggest strengths and weaknesses?
Strengths: Forward, Goaltending
Weaknesses: Defense

Which teams do you predict as top five in the FHL this season?
Vikings, Militia, Gladiators, Bulldogs, BOMBERS!

- Do you have a favorite to win it all?
Probably one of the two blowhards.

Which teams do you predict to be near the bottom come season's end?
The usual fare, I think,

Do you have any messages to relay to the fellowship of the FHL?

Hope everyone is having fun. Good luck to all.
