2013-14 FHL PLAYOFFS! Round 1 Summary

ROUND 2 MATCHUPS:
And so the dreams of eight FHL teams were drowned in the success of the remaining eight. There are multiple storylines to follow from the opening round of playoff action.

The most remarkable matchup was certainly between the top seeded Mustangs and the lowly Tigers. As results would have it, the Tigers clawed their way ahead during the last day of action, just as they had come from behind to get into the final sixteen in the first place. On the strength of several good performers, the Mustangs couldn't ride out the lead they had before Sunday's action. Dawgtoy's team performed admirably, but were simply beat out by a red hot team.

The Gladiators-Raiders matchup was another closely contested battle. In the end, the Gladiators matched the Raiders for offense, but edged their lower ranked opponents defensively, squeezing the necessary advantage to advance from their defense and goaltending.

The Vikings ravaged the Stingers. That was a formality. The Vikings were all offense. That was expected. The Stingers fought well. That was admirable. The victors write the history. That is the law.

Following a tight race during the early stages of the week, the Milita could not keep up with the Bulldogs' well balanced group of skaters. They drew points equally from their forwards and defense, which was enough to eliminate a Milita which lacked the same output from their blueliners.

The Heatwave are coming on, enjoying the best week of all FHL teams, which was more than enough to slay the Serpents. The convincing way in which the Heatwave saw off the Serpents may intimidate their next opponent - rival Rhinos - which tallied a score lower than the Serpents last week.

At 58 points, the Rhinos had the second lowest score of all advancing teams. The Lakers lacked necessary contribution from all positions, but kept the race very close for most of the week.

Personal rivals Megasus and Bombers exchanged big words prior to the first round, but only the former could back his promises up with results. The fine late season form of the Bombers was nowhere to be found - and the Megasus put them to the sword.

The final team to go through to the second round of the playoffs were the Burninators. It was more of a fizzle than a sizzle, but the Rebels couldn't match their opponents in the end. Both sides had relatively weak weeks of action, but the Burninators surely have more in them going forward.

Among the teams that never made the playoff cutoff, the Devils had the best week by far, finishing above all but five teams, which must silence some of the Tavares trade talk of recent times.

UPDATED FOR END OF ROUND 1: ROUND WINNERS IN BOLD..

Finally it has come. Playoff time. The FHL deadline passed by relatively quietly, but noise is to be expected now that the FHL enters its first official playoff campaign. Last year's unofficial champion was the Heatwave, who are certainly among the favourites, but several teams have produced good results the past few weeks and it appears that several matchups are poised for a tight race. Good luck, everyone.

This post will be reserved for the daily update of the playoff matchups - though somewhat later than the automatic update on the standings page. The first round matchups are as follows:

A rather abbreviated version of the survey follows from the (presumably busy with rebuilding) GM tso.

* What is the reason you chose your particular team name?
I didn't change the team name and the current name is fine for me.

* From the original draft, who are still on your roster today?
I didn't participate in the original draft

* Looking back at the inaugural draft - what's the biggest surprise?
N/A

* Who is the face(s) of your franchise?
Joe Thornton

* What do you perceive to be your team's biggest strength?
Forwards

* What do you perceive to be your team's biggest weakness?
Defense, big and dead weight contracts

* What are your immediate goals as GM of your team? What stage of the competitive
process do you see yourself in? (Rebuild, win now, balanced approach, etc.)
Rebuild

* If you were to dress a lineup of 12 forwards, 6 defensemen and 2 goalies from your roster - how would it look?
Same as what I have currently.

* What NHL team would you compare your roster to? (Think, perhaps, in terms of physicality, positional strengths, results, etc.)
Maple Leafs!

* What, if any - and without giving up too many secrets, is your fundamental strategy as an FHL GM?
Still trying to rebuild. So no comments. :)

* Which FHL team, if any, do you view as your rival(s)? Why?
N/A

* Has any FHL trades caught your attention - why is that?
N/A

* Which FHL GM do you think does the best job? Why?
Racki, he was near the bottom of the league at the beginning of the season and he's now currently sitting at #8

* Which teams are the FHL's biggest over- and underachievers in your opinion?
N/A

* Who do you think will win the FHL Regular season this year?
- Is that the same team you believe will win the playoffs as well? Why/why not?
Mustangs. Yup, he has Sidney Crosby on the team. LOL.
________________________________________
* What do you enjoy most about the FHL?
Different than traditional fantasy league. People are really active in the forums and actively looking for trades

* How often do you log on, say in terms of average visits per week?
At first, I login quite often, but I haven't done so recently since there aren't many changes I can do with my team at the moment. Trades proposals were presented but they didn't fix my team's problem.

* If you could change aspects of the FHL, what would you change?
Instead of 35 players + prospects, reduce it down to 28 + prospects. That will prevent people from hoarding players

* Which aspects of the FHL would you be reluctant or opposed to changing?
Waiver wire should stay the same.

* Is there anything else you have to note that would be of interest to the fellowship of the FHL?
N/A

FHL Gazette: General Manager Feature: rhbdken of the Lugers

Team Logo

* What is the reason you chose your particular team name?

The original franchise name was the Icedogs, which was inspired by my love of creating a fictious hockey team called the Saskatoon Ice Dogs in old EA Sports NHL Games. However due to recent changes in development and many mistakes with that organization during my first few years we have rebranded as the Lugers. Now a Luger is a German hand gun as well as the last name of a famous wrestler from the 90’s. This is where the inspiration of this name came about from. Also I think we are one of the first sports teams to sport this moniker

* From the original draft, who are still on your roster today?

Sergei Kostitsyn- (Pending release of contract this offseason due to his bolting from the NHL)
Jason Chimera – (Great 3rd line support winger)

* Looking back at the inaugural draft - what's the biggest surprise?

My biggest surprise in the draft that year was getting a solid 3 forwards in the first 3 rounds, but getting Chimera in the last round was a steal I find. My biggest regret was not getting a defenceman or goaltender with a top 6 pick, which is one of the reasons this team has regressed down the standings.

* Who is the face of your franchise?

Without a doubt it currently is Phil Kessel. Being one of the top 20 forwards in the NHL today and scoring at a point per game.

* What do you perceive to be your team's biggest strength?

This season has been the first year of true committed rebuilding and I feel we have done a great job. We have managed to get all our original draft picks back so we can control our destiny. As well we have solidified our goaltending for years to come with Miller and Scrivens.

* What do you perceive to be your team's biggest weakness?

Forwards is the position we lack much of any support outside a top 3 players. This is something we may have to address via Free Agency and Draft this summer. Also adding a top 2 defenceman would be ideal.

* What are your immediate goals as GM of your team? What stage of the competitive
process do you see yourself in? (Rebuild, win now, balanced approach, etc.)

We are full gear in the rebuild currently and we have assed our goaltending and defencemen this year. We are very comfortable with what we have going forward. 3 of the best young defenceman prospects in the game today play for our organization and we couldn’t be prouder.

* If you were to dress a lineup of 12 forwards, 6 defensemen and 2 goalies from your roster - how would it look?

Derek Roy – Travis Zajac – Phil Kessel
Scott Hartnell – Shawn Thornton – Ryan Clowe
Jesse Winchester – Travis Moen – Jason Chimera
Mikael Samuelsson – Mark Arcobello – James Sheppard
Erik Gudbranson – Jared Cowen
Karl Alzner – Calvin De Haan
Johnny Boychuk – Marc Methot
Ryan Miller
Ben Scrivens

* What NHL team would you compare your roster to?
We are a very young and developing team with potential but not immediate results today. I would say just based on this we would be very similar to the Buffalo Sabres organization (but witl more direction)

* What, if any - and without giving up too many secrets, is your fundamental strategy as an FHL GM?

Finding a focus has been key. My first two years were very distracted and I feel I made too many poor moves for this organization which have hurt more then made things better. This season I have made better moves and everything I have done has had one thing in mind.

* Which FHL team, if any, do you view as your rival(s)? Why?

The Stingers have called us out and we do realize we have made mistakes which have caused this team to be the bottom of the standings. We now realize a direction and hope to make them pay in the next few seasons for throwing our team under the bus

* Has any FHL trades caught your attention - why is that?

The Tavares trade made no sense to me but then again I can’t talk. I gave up on Malkin and Ovechkin with no return to the team to boost our performance. So to be fair I will say my trades ache on terrible but hopefully going forward the majority of the trades will benefit the team for the future.

* Which FHL GM do you think does the best job? Why?

Even though they have had issues this season, there is a reason the Heatwave have won two straight FHL cups. They have an amazing core of players getting the most from all positions. This is a team that the Lugers strive to be someday.

* Which teams are the FHL's biggest over- and underachievers in your opinion?

The Bulldogs are getting the most out of a roster that just isn’t quite up to par with many of the others in the league. With no clear goaltender and lots of overachieving forwards they find themselves a playoff contender more years then not

The Milita are a team I feel should be in contention ever year for the title yet they are near the bottom half of the standings. Usually it’s one key thing that has hurt the team, but they have a great roster which will hopefully move them up the standings in the coming years.

* Who do you think will win the FHL Regular season this year?
The Gladiators will pull through to win the league season this year however I feel that with Stamkos back the Heatwave will pull through to claim their 3rd consecutive league title
________________________________________
* What do you enjoy most about the FHL?
I enjoy the interaction of the game and saying I found and made these players. If feels exciting to see a talent you believe in succeed in hockey and have the support that you have had for him since the start.

* How often do you log on, say in terms of average visits per week?
I try to visit once a day but life does happen and I do go through large periods of inactivity. This has been cut down a lot since this season due to a rejuvenated focus on the franchise.

* If you could change aspects of the FHL, what would you change?
I would like to see less 2nd/3rd round draft picks as this does effect player development as they are more a waste of time to put a roster spot for someone who may not play for 3-6 years in pro hockey

* Which aspects of the FHL would you be reluctant or opposed to changing?
The way the site is run is great, i don’t think I have seen a better system but I am open to change as long as it’s positive in the long run.

* Is there anything else you have to note that would be of interest to the fellowship of the FHL?
Stay true to your team!
